Transportation Survey Identifies Emissions as Trucking Industry’s Top Priority
A comprehensive survey conducted by Breakthrough, a transportation research company, has revealed the concerns, opportunities, and priorities of shippers and carriers for the remainder of 2023.
The transportation industry has been grappling with economic, political, and environmental challenges over the past five years. However, the survey highlights that present-day macroeconomic forces are shaping the industry’s current priorities as it strives to recover.
The report also emphasizes the growing emphasis on sustainability objectives among industry leaders. Breakthrough notes that 94% of transportation professionals consider reducing emissions a top priority for the next year due to increasing consumer demand for sustainable products.
The urgent and clear calls for sustainability throughout the value chain have resulted in a high demand for electric and alternative energy vehicles. The study reveals that if carriers offer these green solutions, the majority of shippers (99%) express their willingness to take advantage of them, with 79% strongly agreeing.
Trucking Industry Faces Multiple Challenges Towards Greener Future
Carriers themselves also recognize the value of integrating electric vehicles into their fleets, with 97% of respondents acknowledging the benefits. Furthermore, 59% of carriers plan to adopt electric vehicles by the end of 2023.
The transportation industry faces challenges such as inflation, volatile fuel prices, and capacity fluctuations. These factors make it crucial for organizations to prioritize efficiency measures. Matt Muenster, the chief economist at Breakthrough, emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices despite these economic hurdles. With the availability of intermodal capacity and increased investment in alternative energy technology and vehicles, shippers and carriers have an opportunity to transition toward more environmentally conscious operations.
The report provides a comprehensive overview of how organizations are addressing both economic and ecological challenges, shedding light on their strategies to navigate the evolving transportation landscape.
