What is a TxDOT Number?

A Texas DOT Number (aka a TxDOT/TxDMV) is a unique identification number issued by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to motor carriers operating in Texas. It is used to regulate and monitor commercial motor vehicle operations within the state.

Do I Need a TxDOT Number?

According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, you must register as a motor carrier and obtain a TxDOT Number when you meet any of the following criteria:
Operate a commercial motor vehicle or combination of vehicles with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) exceeding 26,000 pounds
• Transport household goods for compensation, regardless of vehicle weight
• Transport hazardous materials in a quantity that requires placarding
• Operate a vehicle designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver
• Operate a farm vehicle with a gross weight, registered weight, or gross weight rating of 48,000 pounds or more
• Operate a commercial school bus

Do I Need a TxDOT Number if I Have a USDOT Number?

Yes, you may still need a TxDOT number even if you have a USDOT number, depending on your specific operations in Texas. If your operations are intrastate in Texas (even if you have a USDOT number for other states), you still need a TxDOT number.

How to Get a TxDOT Number

To get a TxDOT number, you will need to apply for a Texas Motor Carrier Registration. This can be done through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV). You must also have a USDOT number.
